Seat-bucket pricing is a billing model where you purchase seats in fixed increments rather than individually. monday.com is the most prominent example in the task management category: seats are sold in buckets of 3, then 5, then 10, then 15, then 20.
A 6-person team on monday Standard doesn’t pay $12 Ã- 6 = $72/month. They pay $12 Ã- 10 = $120–$144/month — the next bucket above 5. That’s $600–$864/year more than per-user-true tools like ClickUp, Asana, or Trello.
Why it exists
Seat-bucket pricing is a SaaS revenue strategy. It reduces the friction of small purchases (you’re not agonising over whether to add a 6th seat) while increasing average revenue per account. The bucket increments ensure vendors capture more revenue as teams grow by any amount — a team going from 10 to 11 people triggers a jump to the 15-seat bucket.
For the vendor, this is efficient. For the buyer, it creates invisible costs.

The teams most penalised: 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19 — any team landing between bucket sizes pays for empty chairs.
Who this affects most
Lean B2B SaaS teams of 5–20 people — exactly the segment for which monday.com is primarily marketed — are the most likely to land on non-bucket sizes. A 15-person SaaS ops team that adds a contractor in month 3 jumps from the 15-seat bucket to the 20-seat bucket: $240/month instead of $180/month for 16 actual users.

How to avoid it

Choose per-user-true billing. ClickUp, Asana, Trello, Todoist, and Wrike all bill per actual user. A 6-person team on ClickUp Business pays $72/month — not $144/month.

If you use monday, land on a bucket size. Teams of exactly 3, 5, 10, 15, or 20 avoid the empty-chair tax. If you’re hiring and your team will cross a bucket boundary in 6 months, calculate the post-hire cost before signing.

Negotiate. Enterprise tiers at monday.com allow custom seat counts. If you’re buying 20+ seats, negotiate per-user pricing directly with a sales rep.
